With sophisticated machines and instruments beginning to play an ever-increasingly important role in healing and saving human lives, biomedical engineers who conceptualise, design and develop healthcare equipment are a much sought after species. With the demand for biomedical engineers far outstripping supply, this is one of the hottest careers of the 21st century. Biomedical engineering study programs are available at the undergraduate, Master’s and Ph D. levels. To be eligible for admission into a B.E. (biomedical) degree program, a Plus Two certificate is a prerequisite of writing the Common Entrance Test . There are few colleges offering this specialization considering the rising demand. Among them in Mumbai are Thadomal Shahani College, D. J. Sanghvi College, Watoomal College, Mahatma Gandhi Mission College, and Indian Institute of Technology. Manipal Institute of Technology, Cochin Institute of Science & Technology, and Banaras Hindu University also offer biomedical engineering at the bachelor’s level. For postgraduates various specializations are available such as biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, rehabilitation engineering, biomaterials, medical imaging and clinical engineering.
